Classic Mini Dash with warning lights

Seeing warning lights in your Mini can be worrying, especially if you're unsure what they mean. These lights are there to alert you to a potential issue that needs attention—so don’t ignore them and hope they’ll disappear on their own.

In this week’s blog, we’ll go over the different warning lights that may appear in your Mini, explain what they mean, and what actions you should take. We’ll also let you know when there’s no need to worry.

Amber Warning Light: Low Oil Pressure

An amber or orange warning light in your Mini typically signals low oil pressure. If your Mini still uses the original oil pressure switch, this light will come on when the pressure drops below 7 psi.

When it should light up: This light should illuminate when you turn on the ignition and go off immediately once the engine is running.

What to do if it stays on: If this light stays on while the engine is running, it means the oil pressure is dangerously low, and your engine could be at risk of failure. This issue needs urgent attention—get it checked out right away!

Red Warning Light: Alternator Charging

A red warning light in your Mini is related to the alternator or dynamo not charging the battery.

When it should light up: It should illuminate when you switch on the ignition and turn off once the engine is running.

What to do if it lights up while driving

If the light stays on while the engine is running, it could indicate several issues, such as:

  • Loose, worn, or wet drive belt: Tighten or replace as needed.
  • Loose or bad connection to the battery: Check the battery terminals, as well as the earth lead connections to the body and engine.
  • Loose or faulty connection to the alternator/dynamo.
  • Failed alternator: If necessary, replace the alternator.

Green Warning Light: Indicators or Hazards

A green warning light shows that your Mini's indicators or hazard lights are in use.

When it should light up: It should flash in time with the indicators or hazard warning lights. This is purely informational—no need to worry unless it fails to flash.

Blue Warning Light: Main Beam

The blue warning light indicates that the main beam headlights are on.

When it should light up: This light should come on when you select the main beam headlights.

We hope this guide helps you better understand what your Mini’s warning lights are telling you. Remember, these lights are an important part of your Mini’s diagnostic system and should never be ignored.
