A Guide to Rear Suspension: Bogus 2 Build

The iconic Bogus 2 rebuild project continues at Mini Sport Ltd.! In our previous guide, we delved into the front suspension refresh. Now, let's shift gears and focus on bringing the rear suspension of this classic Mini back to life.

Preparation is Key: Setting Up the Subframe for Bogus 2

For a smooth and damage-free installation on the Bogus 2, we recommend assembling the rear subframe on a workbench. Here's what our expert technicians did:

  • Trunnion Installation: Weight saving is crucial for performance, so we opted for an ultra-light alloy DSN Classics trunnion kit for Bogus 2. The trunnion pins are standard Mini items, and we used Mini Sport poly bushes for improved handling and durability. • Mounting Point Cleaning: Powder coating can sometimes cover the mounting points for the rear trunnions. We meticulously cleaned these areas on Bogus 2 and checked the threads for any damage. A wire brush, nut, or even a dye can be used for cleaning, depending on the situation. Need help identifying the right cleaning tools for your Mini restoration project? • Copper Grease for Protection: To prevent seizing, we applied a light coat of copper grease to the trunnion shaft and threads before fitting them with Nyloc nuts on Bogus 2. However, final tightening is done only after the subframe is secured at all four corners

Subframe Installation

Lifting and manoeuvring the subframe requires at least two people due to the numerous bolts involved. Here's how we tackled it on the Bogus 2 project:

  • Strategic Bolt Placement: We recommend starting with at least one bolt in each trunnion before attempting the second for better alignment. It's crucial to be extra careful to avoid scratching the paint during this process. Tip: Use painter's tape around the edges of the subframe mounting points for additional protection!
  • Captive Nut Care: The mounting points in the heelboard require special attention. We recommend supporting the subframe to take stress off the bolts while tightening them onto the captive nuts on Bogus 2. These are critical components for suspension geometry, and replacing stripped threads can be a hassle. Radius Arms and Components: Optimising Performance

With the subframe secured on Bogus 2, we focused on the radius arms and other components:

  • Camber/Tracking Bracket Adjustments: Our Mini Sport adjustable rear camber/tracking brackets required slight modifications to fit the DSN leading trunnion's outer radius on Bogus 2. This step isn't necessary with standard camber brackets.
  • Copper Greasing for Easy Maintenance: We applied copper grease to specific areas like the connecting rod and outer shaft on Bogus 2 to prevent seizing but ensure future disassembly is possible.

  • Damper Clearance: Unfortunately, the Spax dampers we used required slight trimming of the upper edge of the radius arm for clearance on Bogus 2. This modification shouldn't be necessary with all dampers. Not sure which Shock Absorbers are right for your Mini? • Handbrake Quadrant Installation: We opted for Mini Sport dry-suspension-specific handbrake quadrants on Bogus 2 and ensured the tiny split pin and washer were secured to keep the quadrant shaft in place.
