Furniture... A seat of power

In our DIY Mini restoration series, we’re revisiting the Bogus 2 Mini build with a focus on the seat and harness installation. Whether you’re prepping for the track or just want a more secure driving experience, getting these elements right is crucial. Follow along as we guide you through the process, sharing expert tips to ensure both safety and comfort in your Mini.

Custom Alloy Seat Brackets: A Lightweight Solution

The original steel brackets for the Cobra Suzuka Pro seat were heavy, so Daniel from Mini Sport decided to mock up lighter alloy replacements. These custom brackets were tacked together, tested for fit in the car, and then returned for completion. Triangulation fillets were added to strengthen the brackets, ensuring they’re robust enough for motorsport use.

Central Seat Positioning

To improve driver ergonomics, the seat was moved to a more central position, aligning it directly with the steering column and pedals. This setup is crucial, especially in motorsport, where regulations often dictate that the seat must not cross the car’s central line.

Finalising the Seat Position: Comfort Meets Performance

Before finalising the seat position, make sure you can comfortably reach all the relevant controls when strapped in. The steering column’s improved angle is visible in this setup, offering better control and comfort. Remember, the lower your seat, the lower your Mini’s centre of gravity, which can enhance performance.

Proper Harness Mounting: Safety First

Ensuring your harness is correctly mounted is vital for safety. The harness mounting bracket should be angled to prevent twisting. Here, two washers were used to ensure the eye is at the correct angle, and a split pin was added to the locking mechanism as a safety precaution, often required by scrutineers
