How To Fit Front Suspension Cones

How to fit a front Suspension Cone

Are you contemplating fitting a set of Moulton Smootha Ride Front Suspension Cones to your Classic Mini? We understand that many Mini enthusiasts take on this task themselves, and it can be quite a frustrating job. That's why we've decided to provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to fit a front Suspension Cone.

The first step in fitting suspension cones is ensuring you have the correct specialist tools. Alongside your usual garage tools, you'll need a Cone Compressor, which is essential for the job at hand.

STEP 1: Begin by loosening the wheel nuts on the side you intend to work on, then remove the subframe tower bolt from the bulkhead. You'll likely need a socket for this.

STEP 2: Next, use your cone compression tool. Ensure you're using the correct one, as older Minis have a different thread. Screw the bars' thread all the way down the subframe tower bolt hole and as far into the Cone as possible.

Our mechanic used his own ratchet handle with his Cone Compression tool, but it's typically 'T' shaped. Screw this part into the threaded bar as tightly as possible.

STEP 3: Now it's time to lift the car. Our mechanic used a ramp, but a good car jack will suffice. Axle stands should also be used to steady the car. Once the car is off the ground, remove the wheel to access the Suspension Cone.

STEP 4: The subsequent step involves removing the Upper Arm and Damper to access the Cone. You may need to flex the Inner Wing slightly to reach the necessary bolts, but try to avoid bending it if possible. Your wrench will come in handy here.

STEP 5: With the Upper Arm and Damper removed, you can now remove the Suspension Cone. You'll notice the difference in height between the New Cone and the Old Standard Cone, mainly due to the weight of the engine compressing the Cones over time.

STEP 6: Moving on to refitting, insert the new Suspension Cones in place and wind them up using the compression tool before fitting the Adjsta Ride Trumpets.

STEP 7: Slide the Upper Arm back in place and fit the Knuckle Joints. If you're changing from Standard to Adjusta Ride cones, use new knuckle joints. However, if you're only replacing the existing Cones, there's no need to change the knuckle joint. Our mechanic has just fitted the Top Arm.
